40 Years ago in F1 and 500cc GP....what happened

Professional Motorsports - MX-5 Miata Forum - forum.miata.net
Ahhh I remember in the glory days of my youth, 40 years ago back when hardly anybody in the US cared about F1 or motorcycle GP racing we had not one but TWO world champions (not as of this date but later that year:

Mario Andretti - F1

Kenny Roberts - 500cc GP

While Mario was our last F1 world champion, Kenny started a run that had him, Spencer, Lawson, Rainey, Schwantz, running up a long string of titles until the mid 1990's. Since then we only have had two (Kenny Roberts, Jr. and of course Hayden).

I realize F1 has gotten increasingly provincial and barriers to getting into that scene, I don't follow Moto GP much but WTH happened to US racers?

For a while there we were at the top of the world, now not at all.
