Valve Stem Seals.... DONE! - Cabriolet -
First let me describe the symptoms. When I started the car cold there was almost no signs of smoke, (Which through me off, because it goes against everything I know about how bad valve seals behave) but then after if ran for like ten minutes maybe less it would start to emit gray blue smoke from the tailpipe when idling? If I hit the gas it would send out nice little smoke signals and then clear for a second or two, then go right back its regular pattern.

If I drove it I wouldn't notice a cloud or anything, but when I stopped lets say to wait in traffic, I definitely see a smoke trail. It WAS flat out embarrassing.

Okay so now let me explain what I used to pull off a Valve Seal Replacement ~ Ghetto Style. ?NO FANCY TOOLS REQUIRED?

You need a set of long needle nose pliers, a typical valve spring compressor, and a 4ft piece of nylon rope. I replaced the Timing belt and valve cover gasket also.

1) Disconnect the battery terminal

2) Get your timing mark on zero

3) Remove distributor cap and scribe where rotor is pointing. Should be close to the little notch on distributor body. (This step avoids re timing later)

4) Pull off valve cover, and upper timing belt cover.

5) Inspect and make sure little notch in cam gear is even at where metal timing cover and valve cover would intersect. (It should be)

6) Remove all the lower pulleys, and lower timing cover.

7) Remover old timing belt.

8) Carefully remove Camshaft assembly keeping track of where caps belong.

9) Remove valve shims (they look like little miniature pistons) again make sure you pay attention to where they came from.

10) I started at #4 and worked backwards, but bring piston all the way down using a long skinny screwdriver while you turn motor over by hand, and stop.

11) Now take the nylon rope and pack it into the cylinder until it wont take any more.

12) Now bring the piston up until it stops.

13) Take your valve spring compressor and luckily there is rail molded into the head, so its kind of odd way to collapse the spring, but it works.

14) Remove Keepers and valve spring.

15) Remove Valve Seal using a small needle like screwdriver, pull the spring out of the seal, you can?t see it but after you do one, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

16) Then take the long needle nose pliers, and grip the metal ridge that is the outside of the seal, and careful not to slip and scar the valve stem, twist the seal back and forth and then you'll feel it start to come out.

17) The valve seals come with a little plastic stem cover, place that over the valve stem and push the new seal of the stem.

18) Take a deep socket the fits the seal and make sure it doesn't interfere with valve stem. Then lightly tap the seal onto the guide with the socket. (Gently)

19) Now the Fun really starts! This is the hardest part, the keepers are tough but by the time you get to #8 you'll be an expert. (Tip: A small magnet can be very helpful)

20) Now just follow all the same steps and be patient. Then put everything back on in reverse order, torquing everything to spec. (Its no race take your time)

If your lucky like me, when your done it will smoke like crazy for about 5 minutes then clear out and no more smoke signal.
