NB1 5spd transmission whine
Hi all, I picked up my 99' nb a couple months ago and have been loving it so far! It has 46xxx original miles on it and is nearly spotless inside and out.
Lately however, I've been noticing a whine from the trans area that has me a little worried.. It sounds similar to straight cut gears (or reverse). It is most noticeable in 1-3, no noise at all in 4th, and just barely audible in 5th. It seems to only whine under acceleration/load and not under decel, and varies with rpms, not speed. It is quiet enough that my radio and blower motor completely mask the noise, so it is hard to pinpoint when it started (though I suppose it's possible that it has been doing this the entire time).
I checked the trans fluid level and there was enough to where it spilled out of the fill hole and onto my hand. The fluid looked new to me (honey colored). I have not checked the inner shift boot for holes yet, but I let a friend drive the car and the noise is definitely apparent from the outside. It is also worth mentioning that it shifts great, no slop, grinds, or pop outs whatsoever.
Are these transmissions just noisey? I have yet to own a car that whines quite like this, but can tolerate the noise if it is normal.
Is my trans possibly suffering premature wear? I find it hard to believe that I would be having problems at such low mileage, even if it were driven very hard. But I guess anything is possible.
Basically, how should I approach this?
Sorry for the long winded post, I wanted to be as descriptive as possible. Thanks in advance!
