Toyota - Toyota GT86 advice on crossover options

General Car Audio Discussion - DIYMA Car Audio Forum - www.diymobileaudio.com
I recently installed some Hertz HSK 165XL speakers in the stock locations in my car (Door and Dash) and along with sound deadening in the doors (CLD/MLV/CCF) they have made a dramatic improvement over the cheap stock drivers.

I bought a budget 4 ch AMP/DSP combo a good few weeks ago which I planed to drive from the stock Touch 2 Panasonic head unit speaker outputs but due to issues with my battery going flat I have been holding back. As the dealer is fitting a new battery for me on Friday I had hoped to install the amp over the coming weekend.

As the amp is 4 channel and has active crossovers built in I could run tweeters from the front channel and woofers from the rear (I would leave the stock 3 inch rear fill speakers disconnected, I fade them out at the moment anyway)

Or I could keep the Hertz passive crossovers and just use the amp to increase output and apply EQ.

(The remaining channel could be used for a sub at a later point.)

The amp only has front and rear EQ options, not left and right so I am wondering how much use it would be if I can only apply settings to tweeters and woofers as sets. From what I've read on here its quite key to EQ left and right separately. Note the EQ is 7 channel parametric.

I've read the HSK 165XLs will really benefit from active crossovers and I'm quite keen to apply some of the tuning principals I've read on here, so that's the way I'm leaning at the moment.

Anyone here have any opinions that could sway me one way or the other?

Also any tips on what tuning steps would produce good results with either setup, bearing in mind the EQ limitations would be appreciated (I have a Dayton IMM6 mic and windows tablet with REW)

Last thing I was wondering is about using protection for the tweeters if I go for active crossovers, it seems from what I've read opinions are divided on this topic if they are a good idea or not?
