Cluthch and Flywheel Advice

NB (1998-2005) - MX-5 Miata Forum - forum.miata.net
Hey All,

Its time to replace my clutch on my '99.

Let me tell you my situation:

I'm the second owner and I've had it for less than a year. I bought it to just drive around the canyons for a year or two then sell it. It has 198k miles and I have put the last 1000 miles on it myself since March. I'm in California so all I've done ,performance wise, is a CARB legal(K&N) intake and Cobalt dual tail pipe exhaust(cat back). So nothing crazy. When I was looking around for a Miata, I found one that had a newer clutch and a lightweight flywheel (8-10lb) intake and exhaust, again in California he was a little limited as to how far he went on the mods. I called him to see the car and he already had two people give him offers over the phone. When I sell mine I would like that kind of demand too.

So my question is, what should I get as far as a new clutch and flywheel?

With 200k miles and the small mods I have, should I just get a stock clutch and flywheel and save some money since I plan on selling it in a year? Maybe stock clutch but a lightweight flywheel(@13lb)? I have to replace the clutch, but if you were to buy a Miata that was comparable, would the lightweight flywheel put this car at the top of the list? Make you spend a little more? Or would you be looking to replace the clutch and flywheel to a more extreme extent?

Also, I have replaced the tires, brakes, timing belt, installed a bigger front sway bar, intake, exhaust, radiator, stock shocks all in the last 1000 miles. So, if there seems to be nothing needed for a good long while do I spend the extra $300 for a light weight flywheel or more for a beefier clutch?
